2009 - 2014 The learning dynamics of external–internal knowledge and exploitation–exploration: the case of SMEs’ learning-capacity building
The research in this thesis provides an understanding of the growth of the firm from the co- evolution of its learning and technological trajectory by focusing on the micro components of learning and the process of capacity building. It aims to explain the degree of complementarity, interdependency and co-evolution within the process of knowledge integration and learning over the firm’s technological trajectory. In doing so, it searches for the process of capacity building, emphasizing the interaction between knowledge reconfiguration – i.e. whether the source of knowledge is passive, active or interactive – and its orientation – i.e. whether it is explorative or exploitative. In brief, the thesis analyses the link between knowledge integration, technological learning, capacity building and technological transformation.

2007 - 2008 INSTITUTIONAL INVOLVEMENT IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF LOCALIZED BIOTECHNOLOGY-BASED INDUSTRIES: THE CASE OF THE BIOTECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY IN CAMBRIDGESHIRE, UNITED KINGDOM
This study focuses on social technologies often called in other approaches as institutions. It attempted to contribute to the theoretical and empirical discussion of the role of institutions for industrial dynamics, based on the case of the biotechnology industry in Cambridgeshire, United Kingdom, analyzing the last 15 years (1990 – 2005). Using a qualitative method of analysis, based on a `socio-historical perspective`, three institutional frameworks were considered: the Governmental framework, the Science base and research framework and, the financial framework. In the case of the biotechnology-based industry in Cambridgeshire the evidence shows that institutional arrangements and changes in the policy priorities contribute to promote technological change, hence industrial growth. Institutional changes after 1998 in the region of analysis reflected improvements in the industrial performance: After 2000 the cluster had its greatest expansion and 26% of the companies were set up, employment showed the highest growth period during 2002 – 2005 of 17% on average per year and in terms of spin-off, 56% new firms were created within the University of Cambridge between 2001 – 2004. The actions and decisions taken by the UK`s government foster the biotech industry more than a response to an industrial crisis. The University of Cambridge recognized as the most important Research and Development -R&D- organization in the region, was shifted from a system oriented to promote basic science to a system with incentives to set up technology transfer and, the financial framework which hosts more than 15 venture capitalist funds, according to what was found, was always a system oriented to the market. The combination of these three major changes in those institutional frameworks have created an adequate environment to improve the way in which knowledge has been transferred from science to business, hence letting the development of the biotechnology industry in the Cambridgeshire Region continually growing.
