- The CAREC and its Neighboring Regions: A diagnostic of the intra-bloc and extra-bloc trade
The study examines the dynamics of intra-CAREC trade flows and trade potential to the neighboring regions, namely Russia, Europe, the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and South Asia. The revealed comparative advantage shows that CAREC-WC (CAREC without China) countries have a higher comparative advantage in labor- and resource-intensive manufacturing sectors, which explains the over-dependence of these countries on a few export industries. Similarly, trade complementarity between CAREC members and between CAREC exporters and the neighboring regions is also discussed. Furthermore, we examine the logistic performance and cost of exporting. Although there is opportunity for trade expansion, indicated by the trade complementarity index. However, the dismal logistic acting as a sand in the wheels trade.
